The $^{144}$Ce source for SOX

2015

International audience; The SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillations with BoreXino) project aims at testing the light sterile neutrino hypothesis. To do so, two artificials sources of antineutrinos and neutrinos respectively will be consecutively deployed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in close vicinity to Borexino, a large liquid scintillator detector. This document reports on the source production and transportation. The source should exhibit a long lifetime and a high decay energy, a requirement fullfilled by the (144)Ce-(144)Pr pair at secular equilibrium. It will be produced at FSUE “Mayak” PA using spent nuclear fuel. It will then be shielded and packed according t…

Spectroscopic Tools Applied to Flerovium Decay Chains

2020

Abstract An upgraded TASISpec setup, with the addition of a veto DSSD and the new Compex detector-germanium array, has been employed with the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, to study flerovium (element 114) decay chains. The detector upgrades along with development of new analytical techniques have improved the sensitivity of the TASISpec setup for measuring α-photon coincidences. These improvements have been assessed with test reactions. The reaction 48Ca+206,207Pb was used for verification of experimental parameters such as transmission to implantation DSSD and target-segment to α-decay correlations. The reaction 48Ca+ nat …

Beta-decay of light nuclei close to the proton drip-line: 40Ti and 35Ca

1998

The s-decay of40Ti and35Ca have been studied at the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. The decay schemes were deduced from the observed s-delayed proton and γ emission of40Ti and35Ca into the ground and first excited states of39Ca and34Ar, respectively. The Gamow-Teller strength functionB(GT) of the40Ti s-decay extracted from the s-decay branching ratios and the precisely measured40Ti half-life, provides for the first time an experimental calibration of the neutrino detection efficiency for the ICARUS solar neutrino detector.

CRIS: A new method in isomeric beam production

2013

The Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN, uses laser radiation to stepwise excite and ionize an atomic beam for the purpose of ultra-sensitive detection of rare isotopes, and hyperfine-structure measurements. The technique also offers the ability to purify an ion beam that is heavily contaminated with radioactive isobars, including the ground state of an isotope from its isomer, allowing decay spectroscopy on nuclear isomeric states to be performed. The isomeric ion beam is selected by resonantly exciting one of its hyperfine structure levels, and subsequently ionizing it. This selectively ionized beam is deflected to a decay spectroscopy station (DS…

Determination of U-Pb ages of zircons by direct measurement of the 210Pb/206Pb ratio

1993

Abstract Precise measurements of the 210Pb/206Pb ratio in zircons permits, for the first time, the determination of complete U-Pb ages by measurement of Pb isotopes only, without determination of the U-Pb ratio by isotope dilution. The 238U daughter isotope 210Pb is generally in radioactive equilibrium with 238U; however, the very short half-life of 210Pb (22.3a) results in extremely low 210Pb/206Pb ratios of ∼ 10−8, especially for Archaean zircons. These ratios have been determined using a Finnigan MAT 262® mass spectrometer equipped with a high abundance sensitivity lens system (RPQ). The accuracy of the 210Pb method has been tested on nine different zircon samples with 207Pb/206Pb ages f…

Low-damping spin-wave propagation in a micro-structured Co2Mn0.6Fe0.4Si Heusler waveguide

2012

We report on the investigation of spin-wave propagation in a micro-structured Co2Mn0.6Fe0.4Si (CMFS) Heusler waveguide. The reduced magnetic losses of this compound compared to the commonly used Ni81Fe19 allow for the observation of spin-wave propagation over distances as high as 75 μm via Brillouin light scattering (BLS) microscopy. In the linear regime, a maximum decay length of 16.7 μm of the spin-wave amplitude was found. The coherence length of the observed spin-wave modes was estimated to be at least 16 μm via phase-resolved BLS techniques.

Identification of Thorium-236

1973

Abstract The new nuclide 236Th has been produced via the (γ, 2 p) reaction by irradiation of 238U with 140 MeV bremsstrahlung. After chemical separation of thorium, the half-life was determined to be 36 ± 3 min -from the growth-decay curve of the strongest γ-ray transition of the daughter nuclide, 9 min 236Pa.

The growth of “black crusts” on calcareous building stones in Palermo (Sicily): a first appraisal of anthropogenic and natural sulphur sources

2008

Chemical, mineralogical and isotopic composition (34S/32S) analyses were carried out on “black crusts” developed on the old buildings of Palermo (Sicily) with the aim to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic sulphur sources. Furthermore individual samples of total suspended particulate (TSP) were collected and analysed in order to estimate the influence of air pollution on the decay process of calcareous stones in a typical southern Mediterranean coastal environment. SEM/EDS analysis, X-ray diffractometry, IR spectroscopy and liquid chromatography led to the compositional characterization of “black crusts” and airborne particulate matter in the city. Sulphur isotopic compositions of…
